About the Florida State Flag

Florida adopted its current flag design in 1900, when voters approved adding the red St. Andrew's cross to the white field that had been the state's banner since 1868. The state seal at center dates to 1985 in its current revised form. The Seminole woman in the seal reflects Florida's indigenous heritage, while the sabal palmetto is the state tree. Florida became the 27th state in 1845 and has flown under five different national flags (Spain, France, Great Britain, the Confederate States, and the United States), earning its "Land of Flowers" name from the Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon, who arrived during Easter season (Pascua Florida) in 1513.
