About the Idaho State Flag

Adopted in 1907, Idaho's flag is the only US state flag designed by a woman: Emma Edwards Green. The state seal she created for it tells the story of Idaho's economy and values. The miner represents the state's mining heritage (Idaho was built on gold and silver rushes in the 1860s), while the woman holding scales represents justice, liberty, and equal suffrage. Idaho was just the fourth state to grant women's voting rights, in 1896. The elk's head symbolizes Idaho's abundant wildlife, and the state flower, the syringa (mock orange), adorns the seal. "Idaho" is believed to derive from a Shoshone phrase meaning "the sun comes from the mountains."
