New Jersey State Flag | Eder Endura-Nylon Outdoor Flag
The New Jersey state flag features the state coat of arms centered on a buff (yellowish-tan) field, making it one of only two state flags that are not blue, white, or red as the dominant background color. The coat of arms displays a shield with three plows, representing New Jersey's agricultural tradition, flanked by the goddesses Liberty (holding a staff with a Phrygian cap) and Ceres (holding a cornucopia). A forward-facing horse's head crests the design, and a banner below reads "Liberty and Prosperity" with the date 1776. The buff color was specified by George Washington himself in 1779 for New Jersey regiments.
New Jersey's geography packs an outsized range of weather into a small state. The Shore communities face Atlantic salt air, hurricane-force winds, and coastal flooding. The Pine Barrens see intense summer heat and humidity. Northern New Jersey, along the Appalachian ridges, gets heavy snow, ice storms, and sustained winter wind. The 200-denier Endura-Nylon with SolarGuard UV finish is engineered for exactly this kind of variety: it resists salt corrosion near the coast, dries quickly after summer storms, and handles freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or fraying. Reinforced fly-end stitching and canvas heading with brass grommets keep this flag performing through all four of New Jersey's distinct seasons.
About the New Jersey State Flag
New Jersey's coat of arms dates to 1776, designed under the direction of Pierre Eugene du Simitiere, the same consultant who worked on the Great Seal of the United States. The buff background was designated by General Washington when he ordered that New Jersey troops use buff facings on their Continental Army uniforms, distinguishing them from other states. New Jersey ratified the Constitution on December 18, 1787, becoming the third state to do so. The three plows on the shield recognize the state's agricultural roots, while the horse crest reflects New Jersey's long equestrian tradition (the state is still sometimes called the "Horse Capital of the World"). The current flag design was officially adopted in 1896.
