About the Oklahoma State Flag

Adopted in 1925 and modified with the addition of "Oklahoma" in 1941, the flag was designed by Louise Funk Fluke, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Oklahoma became the 46th state on November 16, 1907. The Osage shield represents the state's Native American roots; Oklahoma's name itself comes from the Choctaw words "okla" (people) and "humma" (red), meaning "red people." The state was created from Indian Territory, and today Oklahoma has the second-largest Native American population of any state. The crossed olive branch and peace pipe represent the desire for harmony between Native and non-Native peoples, a theme central to Oklahoma's identity since its founding.
