About the Oregon State Flag

Oregon became the 33rd state on February 14, 1859. The flag's front seal was adopted in 1903 and tells the story of Oregon's settlement: the covered wagon represents the Oregon Trail pioneers, the departing British warship and arriving American steamer symbolize the transition from British to American sovereignty, and the eagle represents the federal government's protection. The beaver on the reverse is central to Oregon's history; it was the beaver fur trade that first drew European and American explorers to the Oregon Country in the early 1800s.
