North Dakota State Flag | Eder Endura-Nylon Outdoor Flag

North Dakota State Flag | Eder Endura-Nylon Outdoor Flag

The North Dakota state flag is based on the banner carried by the state's infantry regiment during the Philippine-American War. On a dark blue field, a bald eagle clutches an olive branch and a bundle of arrows in its talons, with a shield on its breast bearing thirteen stripes. The eagle holds a ribbon in its beak reading "E Pluribus Unum," and a fan-shaped sunburst of golden rays spreads above thirteen stars arranged in an arc. Below the eagle, a red scroll bears "North Dakota." It is one of the few state flags with direct military origins.

North Dakota's climate is among the most extreme in the lower 48. Winter temperatures routinely drop to minus 20 or colder across the northern plains, with sustained winds that produce dangerous wind chills. Blizzards can last for days, and spring brings violent thunderstorms, hail, and occasional tornadoes. Summer sun is intense at this latitude, with long days and strong UV. The 200-denier Endura-Nylon with SolarGuard finish is built for conditions like these: it stays flexible in extreme cold, resists UV degradation through long summer exposure, and dries rapidly after storms. Reinforced fly-end stitching is essential in a state where 30+ mph winds are a regular occurrence, and the canvas heading with brass grommets provides a secure, corrosion-resistant attachment.

About the North Dakota State Flag

North Dakota's flag traces directly to the colors carried by the First North Dakota Infantry during the Philippine-American War of 1898 to 1905. The state legislature adopted the design in 1911, specifying that it closely follow the military banner. North Dakota became the 39th state on November 2, 1889 (the same day as South Dakota; President Harrison shuffled the signing documents so no one would know which was admitted first). The flag's military heritage sets it apart from most state flags, which typically draw from colonial seals or civic symbols. A 2011 attempt to redesign the flag was rejected by voters, preserving the original military design.
