About the Maryland State Flag

Maryland's flag is the only US state flag derived entirely from English heraldic tradition. George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore, received the charter for the Maryland colony from King Charles I in 1632. The Calvert family arms (black and gold) and Crossland family arms (red and white) were both associated with Lord Baltimore's lineage. During the Civil War, Confederate-sympathizing Marylanders adopted the Crossland banner, while Union supporters used the Calvert colors. After the war, the combined four-quarter design emerged as a symbol of reconciliation. Maryland officially adopted this unified flag in 1904. Today, the Maryland flag's bold patterns have become a cultural phenomenon, appearing on everything from athletic uniforms to crab-shaped decals, representing a fierce state pride unique in American culture.
