Ohio State Flag | Eder Endura-Nylon Outdoor Flag
Ohio's state flag holds a unique distinction: it is the only non-rectangular US state flag, shaped as a burgee (swallowtail pennant). The design features five horizontal stripes of red and white, representing roads and waterways. A blue triangle at the hoist contains a large red disk surrounded by a white ring, forming the letter "O" for Ohio. Seventeen white stars around the triangle represent Ohio as the 17th state, with thirteen stars in the outer group for the original colonies and four additional stars for the next states admitted. It is one of the most recognizable and distinctive state flags in the nation.
This Eder Endura-Nylon Ohio flag is designed for the Buckeye State's variable Great Lakes and Midwest climate. Ohio experiences hot, humid summers, cold winters with lake-effect snow in the north, spring tornado season, and gusty winds across its relatively flat terrain. The 200-denier Endura-Nylon fabric with SolarGuard finish handles UV exposure and holds vivid colors through temperature extremes and precipitation. The flag's unique swallowtail shape makes reinforced stitching particularly important, as the two points of the pennant are vulnerable to wind damage. Canvas heading with brass grommets. Made in the USA by Eder Flag.
About the Ohio State Flag
Ohio adopted its distinctive burgee pennant flag in 1902, designed by John Eisenmann, the architect of the Ohio Building at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo. Ohio became the 17th state on March 1, 1803, though Congress did not officially confirm the admission date until 1953 due to a clerical oversight. The "O" formed by the red disk and white circle has become an enduring symbol of Ohio pride, famously echoed in the "O-H-I-O" cheer at Ohio State University. The five red and white stripes are unique among state flags, and the swallowtail shape was influenced by cavalry guidons used during the Civil War. Ohio has produced eight US presidents, more than any state except Virginia, earning it the nickname "Mother of Presidents."
