Rhode Island State Flag | Eder Endura-Nylon Outdoor Flag

Rhode Island State Flag | Eder Endura-Nylon Outdoor Flag

The Rhode Island state flag displays a golden anchor surrounded by a ring of thirteen gold stars on a white field, with a blue ribbon below bearing the one-word motto "Hope." It is one of the simplest and most elegant state flag designs in the nation. The white background is unique among New England states (most use blue), and the anchor has represented Rhode Island since the colony's founding in 1636. The thirteen stars honor the original colonies, with Rhode Island being the last of the thirteen to ratify the Constitution.

Rhode Island may be the smallest state, but Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic coastline expose flags to serious weather. Coastal winds are persistent, salt air corrodes hardware, and nor'easters bring heavy rain, sleet, and powerful gusts. Summer brings humidity and UV exposure, while winter delivers ice storms and freezing spray. The 200-denier Endura-Nylon with SolarGuard finish is well-suited for these maritime conditions: it resists salt-air degradation, dries quickly after coastal storms, and maintains color vibrancy despite constant UV and moisture exposure. Reinforced fly-end stitching handles the steady coastal winds, and brass grommets resist the corrosion that salt air causes on lesser hardware.

About the Rhode Island State Flag

Rhode Island's anchor symbol dates to 1647, making it one of the oldest state symbols in continuous use in America. The anchor and "Hope" motto were adopted as the colony's seal by settlers who drew the imagery from the biblical Book of Hebrews: "Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul." Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams in 1636 as a refuge for religious freedom, and that independent streak runs through the state's history. Rhode Island was the first colony to renounce allegiance to the British Crown (May 4, 1776) but the last of the original thirteen to ratify the Constitution (May 29, 1790), holding out until the Bill of Rights was guaranteed. The current flag design was adopted in 1897.
