About the Washington State Flag

Washington became the 42nd state on November 11, 1889. The state flag was adopted in 1923, making it one of the newer state flag designs. The green background was chosen to represent the state's vast evergreen forests, and Washington remains the only state to use green as its primary flag color. The George Washington portrait on the seal is based on the famous unfinished painting by Gilbert Stuart. Washington is also the only state named after a U.S. president, and the seal's use of his portrait makes it one of the few state flags to feature a specific historical person.
