South Carolina State Flag | Eder Endura-Nylon Outdoor Flag

South Carolina State Flag | Eder Endura-Nylon Outdoor Flag

The South Carolina state flag is one of the most recognizable and beloved in America: a white crescent and palmetto tree on a field of indigo blue. The design traces directly to the Revolutionary War, when Colonel William Moultrie's troops defended Charleston Harbor against the British fleet under a blue flag bearing a white crescent. The palmetto tree was added later, honoring the palmetto-log fort on Sullivan's Island whose spongy wood absorbed British cannonballs rather than shattering. It is a flag with genuine battle heritage, and South Carolinians display it with fierce pride.

South Carolina's Lowcountry and coastal regions present some of the toughest flag conditions on the East Coast. Salt air from Charleston Harbor to Hilton Head corrodes hardware and degrades fabric. Hurricane season brings sustained high winds and driving rain. Inland, the Upstate sees hot, humid summers with intense UV and occasional ice storms in winter. The 200-denier Endura-Nylon with SolarGuard UV finish is built for this environment: it resists salt-air damage along the coast, dries quickly after tropical downpours, and maintains the deep indigo color that defines this flag. Reinforced fly-end stitching handles coastal gusts, and brass grommets resist the corrosion that salt air inflicts on standard hardware.

About the South Carolina State Flag

South Carolina's flag has roots in the Battle of Sullivan's Island on June 28, 1776, one of the first decisive American victories of the Revolutionary War. Colonel Moultrie designed the original blue flag with a white crescent (likely referencing the silver crescents on his soldiers' caps) for his 2nd South Carolina Regiment. The palmetto tree was added in 1861 when South Carolina seceded from the Union, honoring Fort Moultrie's palmetto-log construction that proved impervious to British cannon fire. The current design was officially standardized in 2021, when the legislature passed an act specifying exact proportions and the indigo shade for the first time. Carolina Day (June 28) remains a state holiday commemorating the 1776 battle.
